Upgrading to WordPress 2.3.2
03 Jan 2008
If you’re a WordPress user and haven’t upgraded to version 2.3.2, now is the time to do so. This release applies a critical security fix to a bug that allows others to access your drafts and timestamped posts.
Many hosting companies offer a one click WordPress installation through Fantastico Deluxe. When I last checked my cPanel, version 2.3.2 was still not available. I looked at the WordPress upgrade instructions and was a bit intimidated. Certain that I would make some horrible mistake and wipe out my entire blog, I looked for other options. I found the perfect solution.
Keith Dsouza of Techie Buzz has released a WordPress Automatic Upgrade plugin. The plugin automatically upgrades your WordPress installation to the latest version provided by WordPress.org. It is an unbelievably simple process. Just download the plugin, unzip it, upload it to your “wp-content/plugins” directory, and activate the plugin. From there, go to your Manage tab and look for the WordPress Automatic Upgrade option. With just a couple of clicks, you’ll have version 2.3.2! You can use the plugin to install future WordPress releases as well.
It really is that simple. It took me no longer than a minute or two, and there were no complications whatsoever. Check it out, and while you’re there, please consider making a small donation to assist Keith in further plugin development.

2008 Jan 03 1Tish, Do you regularly read my mind? Fantastico was still showing 2.3.1 as the latest version. Thanks for the lead on this… I’ll upgrade tonight!

2008 Jan 03 2Just a word of advice to some of your readers out there, Tish… I tried the upgrade based on your suggestion and yes it was easy, but I did encounter a few errors in the final stage, which I’m 99% positive is because I’m hosting my blog on a Windows server, not a Linux one. I always have problems with the blog because of it, since it’s a lot harder to change certain server settings (windows is like crazy secure and doesn’t easily let you alter read/write abilities).
In the end, the upgrade worked and my blog is fine, but I still see minor error messages every time I post or edit a post. From the reader’s perspective though, everything is 100% fine. If I wasn’t lazy (or prob more scared), I’d do a complete re-install of the blog to see if that’d fix things. But I’ll probably just wait it out and switch back to Linux soon.
But yes, Keith’s plugin is super easy and I’m going to use it on my other 2 blogs that ARE on Linux boxes. Thanks for the tip!

2008 Jan 03 3Man… I don’t want to have to upgrade Wordpress again! I swear I only did it last week. Maybe I’ll do it this weekend because I have a few plugins that are a little long in the tooth too.

2008 Jan 08 4I hate to beat he same drum but this plug-in slowed my blog to a crawl. I have installed a few things as of late so like an idiot, I just removed the whole slew of them at once instead of systematically removing one at a time to see what the slowdown was.
My blog popped right up. So I started putting things back and the guilty plug-in was this one.
Ironically, I used it to install 2.3.2 before I troubleshot, even though it took forever. Finally got it on the third try after leaving it alone for 1/2 hour.
Irony, part 2: I had finally gotten tired enough of seeing the “New Update Available” announcement on the admin page that read something like 73 days old. I upgraded to 2.3.1 and when I did the final refresh, the first announcement was that 2.3.2 was available.
Anyway, I must be jinxed. First Bad-Behavior took out my blog and now this. I’m just glad it wasn’t the “Related Posts” plug-in because I LOVE that one.
